  • The History and Technological Advances of SANYO DENKI (28) - Development of the SANUPS W73A Power Conditioner for Wind Power and Hydro Power Generation Systems

History

In recent years, large-scale power outages due to natural disasters have occurred across Japan, and in each case it took several days to restore power. As such, there is an increasing number of customers considering the installation of renewable energy inverters (power conditioners) with an isolated operation function to secure a power supply for emergency situations. There is also a demand for independent power supplies in non-electrified areas such as remote islands. To meet these needs, we developed the SANUPS W73A grid-connected isolated type renewable energy inverter that features an added isolated operation capability to the existing grid-connected type.

Product Features

DC input voltage - DC input power characteristics setting function

For the SANUPS W73A, users can freely set 2 to up to 32 DC input voltage - DC input power characteristics settings to match the output characteristics of a specific wind power or hydroelectric power generator. Moreover, operation start/stop voltage can be set freely for use with various systems, enabling the W73A to efficiently extract the power generated by wind power or hydroelectric power generators.

Isolated operation function

The SANUPS W73A grid-connected isolated type can switch over to isolated operation.

The isolated operation is executed to supply power to emergency facilities in the event of a grid power outage. The power generated by a wind power generator or hydroelectric power generator is rectified into DC power, converted to AC power, then supplied to emergency equipment. The W73A can also supply power to non-electrified areas such as remote islands, serving as an independent power source.

The operation mode switchover can be set to manual or automatic. Moreover, manual operation mode switchover has been simplified and can be done by merely turning the grid output circuit breaker on and off. This enables users to perform switchover to isolated operation without difficult operations.

Remote monitoring service
Combined with our SANUPS PV Monitor and SANUPS NET, the SANUPS W73A can be remotely monitored from a computer or smartphone over the internet.
The SANUPS NET users can select either a power visualization service or system information management service, depending on their needs.
With the power visualization service, power generation status can be displayed and the data can be saved. The system management service, in addition to these, can also notify users of operation status and alarms, and the history log can be browsed.

Dustproof/waterproof performance

The SANUPS W73A has a sealed structure with excellent IP65-rated dustproof and waterproof performance for outdoor use. Protected from the ingress of rain, dust, small insects, etc., this product is highly reliable and can be used with greater confidence. Assuming use in environments susceptible to salt damage, we verified that the SANUPS W73A would not have its functionality and performance impacted by performing a salt spray test (Severity 6 test in accordance with the IEC 60068-2-52 salt spray test method). As such, we have designed the product to be salt resistant so it can be installed in locations 500 meters or more away from a coastline.

The SANUPS W73A grid-connected isolated type renewable energy inverter can meet the needs of those who wish to use electrical power even in environments with no grid power or to secure power supply in times of emergency. Moving forward, in addition to the development of new technologies such as smart grids for solving problems arising from the mass introduction of renewable energy, SANYO DENKI will swiftly develop products that use these new technologies and offer products that use all forms of renewable energy to contribute to a low-carbon society.
