Power supply troubles such as "blackouts" and "momentary outages"(*) caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons are becoming more common in various regions, and interest in these issues is growing not only among companies but also among the private sector. However, there seem to be many cases where people understand the need for such measures but have not taken any measures, or do not know how to take measures.
* Momentary power outage: A momentary power outage caused by a breakdown or failure in a power transmission line or other equipment.
*For more details, please see Basic knowledge and countermeasures for power outages: What are the types of power outages and what are "momentary power outages, momentary dips, and momentary interruptions"?
Company E, a medical equipment trading company, was consulted by the director of a clinic (ophthalmology) that they do business with about measures to take in the event of a power outage or momentary power outage. Mr. D of the Sales Management Department at Company E said the following.
"The area in which our client's clinic is located is subject to frequent lightning strikes, which causes occasional power outages and momentary interruptions. If the lights or medical equipment fall out during a cataract treatment or other procedure, the treatment has to be stopped. This not only causes anxiety for patients, but is also a risk factor that could lead to serious medical accidents. Although our client's clinic had always been troubled by power outages and momentary interruptions, we heard that no concrete measures had been taken." (Mr. D)
However, a momentary power outage did occur during treatment. Since it was only for a short time, no serious problems occurred, but it caused anxiety for the patient. We decided to implement measures to deal with power outages and consulted with Company E.
"After talking to the customer about various issues, we decided that installing a UPS would be an effective solution. Since installation space is limited in small clinics, we proposed a small-capacity UPS.
However, to ensure that treatment can be completed safely even in the event of a power outage, a long-lasting power backup is necessary. This requires larger batteries and securing space for the equipment. Furthermore, issues such as the need to have a contractor present for battery replacement after several years of use and maintenance costs were also an issue." (Mr. D)
Mr. D did not have any information that would satisfy the customer's needs, so he decided to start gathering information immediately.
Mr. D consulted SANYO DENKI CO., LTD., who had previously used the company, about the best UPS for the clinic.
After listening to Mr. D's issues, the SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. representative proposed Uninterruptible Power Supplies" SANUPS A11K-Li."
"SANUPS A11K-Li that was proposed to us switches to battery operation without interruption the moment it detects a power outage, allowing us to continue supplying power. What's more, because it is equipped with a lithium-ion battery, it is small and can provide long-term backup. This means that even if there is a power outage or momentary interruption during treatment, patients will be able to continue treatment without worrying. We thought this was an ideal proposal for our small clinic." (Mr. D)
Satisfied with the performance of the UPS, Mr. D immediately proposed the "SANUPS A11K-Li" to the clinic he was consulting with. The clinic director understood the effectiveness of the system after hearing Mr. D's detailed explanation and decided to introduce it.
"I explained that because it uses lithium-ion batteries, there's no need to replace them like with lead-acid batteries. The fact that it requires no maintenance for 10 years was what helped us decide to install it. Furthermore, when we actually set it up, it was compact and didn't require any complicated construction; all you had to do was plug it into an outlet." (Mr. D)
Afterwards, the director said, "I can now perform treatments with peace of mind." "We were able to provide optimal proposals to our customers. We would like to ask SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. for their continued support." (Mr. D)
