Manufacturers of manufacturing equipment in the semiconductor and liquid crystal industries are required to comply with SEMI standards, which are continually revised as international guidelines for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Many orders for semiconductor manufacturing equipment come from overseas, especially from China, where not only do they need to comply with SEMI standards, but they also need to be CE compliant.
Mr. A, a member of the development department at semiconductor manufacturing equipment manufacturer D, explains it this way:
"We procured voltage dip countermeasures equipment to counter the one-second voltage dip stipulated in the SEMI standard and provided these to customers together with their semiconductor manufacturing equipment. However, there were no CE-compliant Japanese-made voltage dip countermeasures equipment available, so we purchased equipment made in Europe. In addition, there was a need for harmonic countermeasures, so we also procured CE-compliant active filters separately and provided these together with the semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In addition to our own semiconductor manufacturing equipment, we had to procure CE-compliant voltage dip countermeasures equipment and active filters from overseas, and the transportation of these equipment together and the wiring between the equipment were a major burden," said Mr. A.
To reduce this burden, Mr. A was looking for a CE-compliant, Japanese-made voltage drop protection device and active filter.

Explaining the differences, causes, and countermeasures
Mr. A inquired about voltage drop protection devices after a SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. product was recommended to him by an engineer he knew.
"I knew that SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. had a good reputation for its voltage drop countermeasure devices, so I asked them if they had any voltage drop countermeasure devices that met our CE standards." (Mr. A)
After hearing about Mr. A's problems, the SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. staff suggested SANUPS C23A Voltage Dip Compensators. This device is equipped with both instantaneous voltage drop countermeasures and an active filter function, which interested Mr. A as it would save him the trouble of combining the two devices. However, it did not comply with CE.
In response to the request from Company D, SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. developed a voltage drop compensation device that complies with CE, completing the first voltage drop compensation device in Japan that meets CE standards *1 and adding it to its lineup. Mr. A was satisfied with the performance of the developed Voltage Dip Compensators, "SANUPS C23A," and highly praised SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's technological capabilities for its flexible response.
"We were able to obtain CE-compliant Japanese-made voltage drop suppression devices and active filters, which reduced the time and costs involved with importing them. One unit serves two purposes, so we saved the time and labor required to procure and wire two devices, and it also helped us save space." (Mr. A)
From then on, Company D began using SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's Voltage Dip Compensators for export products that required CE compliance.
"Because they're a domestic manufacturer, it's easier to communicate with them than before, which is a plus. We're currently consulting them on things like capacity selection in preparation for the development of a new model." (Mr. A)
