Reduce the cost and effort of replacing UPS batteries

Equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the device has an expected life of 10 years!

Regional Bank Q Bank (Number of employees: approx. 2,000)
assignment
  • Regular battery replacement is required, and the maintenance effort is a burden on the site.
  • The cost of purchasing additional replacement battery packs is a burden.
  • The manufacturer's support was also insufficient, so we considered replacing it with another company's product.
effect
  • Equipped with a lithium-ion battery, battery replacement is unnecessary, making it maintenance-free.
  • No battery replacement costs.
  • Provides stable power supply for ATMs for 10 years.

According to a survey by the Japanese Bankers Association, many customers of regional banks and second-tier regional banks appreciate the fact that there are many ATMs nearby and that they contribute to the local community. ATMs are one of the important lifelines that support citizens' lives, and ATM operators are expected to provide an environment where they can withdraw cash with peace of mind at any time.

Problem

There are issues with UPS battery maintenance...Manufacturer support is not sufficient, so replacement is being considered

Q Bank is a regional bank based in the Kansai region. As a measure against power outages caused by disasters, the bank has installed UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) in each branch to back up its ATMs. Recently, maintenance work was being carried out on UPS units that were nearing the end of their life at several branches, but the bank says that there had been complaints about these UPS units from the field for some time. Manager E of the Administration Department explains as follows:
"The lead batteries used in these vehicles needed to be replaced every few years, which required a lot of maintenance, but the manufacturers' response was not very good. The cost of purchasing replacement battery packs was also an issue."
Q Bank has hundreds of branches, and each area has its own department that handles power outage countermeasures. The department to which Mr. E belongs is also responsible for the operation and model selection of UPS for the dozens of branches in its area.
"ATMs are a lifeline for local customers, so it's essential that they can respond to unforeseen circumstances. Support from the manufacturer is important to maintain battery quality, but it wasn't always sufficient, so we considered replacing the batteries with products from other companies," said E.

Solution

Equipped with a lithium-ion battery, no battery replacement required, no additional costs

Mr. E consulted with an agency he had a relationship with about his UPS issues and was introduced to SANYO DENKI CO., LTD..
"SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's UPS had already been installed at several branches of our bank. We heard that the customer was very satisfied with the support, so we contacted them right away." (Mr. E)
The SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. representative who visited Mr. E listened carefully to his issues regarding maintenance and manufacturer support, and then proposed the SANUPS A11K-Li Double Conversion Online UPS equipped with a lithium-ion battery.
"We were told that because it is a lithium-ion battery type, there is no need to replace the battery *1 and it reduces the hassle of maintenance. Although there is a higher initial cost than conventional lead batteries, there are no additional costs later on such as purchasing or replacing battery packs, so we felt that there was a strong advantage to introducing it." (Mr. E)

*1 Lead-acid batteries need to be replaced every five years, whereas lithium-ion batteries do not need to be replaced for the expected life of the equipment, which is 10 years.

Maintenance-free and quality assured, "decided to introduce in more stores"

To get some idea of whether or not to implement the system, Mr. E asked people in other areas who had already installed SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. UPS for their opinions.
"The person in charge told us that the system has provided a stable power supply to ATMs for 10 years since its introduction, and that it also provides comprehensive support, such as annual inspections *2, which gives the company a sense of security. This opinion was a major factor in our decision to adopt the system." (Mr. E)
Shortly thereafter, Q Bank decided to replace the UPS systems at three branches with SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's UPS, SANUPS A11K-Li.
"We made a comprehensive judgment based on the advantages of the wide input voltage range, high performance, and reduced maintenance load. The battery capacity was less than the 4,800 Ah cell required by the Fire Prevention Ordinance, so no application was required, which was also welcomed by the site." (Mr. E)

Now, two years later, the UPS is still working as expected without any issues. Mr. E has decided to install the system at 11 more stores in his area, and is considering installing it at six more stores, with plans to continue expanding the number of stores where the system is installed.
"By eliminating the need for battery replacement, maintenance work and costs have been reduced, and the system has been well received in the field. We are also very satisfied with the comprehensive support we can now receive." (Mr. E)

*2 On-site maintenance services: In order to keep your SANUPS functioning in the best possible condition, we offer a variety of on-site maintenance services to meet your needs. Please contact us for details.
*3 If the load rate is less than 70%, the rated voltage is -40 to +20%. If the load rate is 70% or more, the rated voltage is -20 to +20%.
