Company R is an industrial machinery manufacturer that produces machine tools, industrial robots, etc. In recent years, as orders from manufacturers with bases overseas have increased, the company was faced with several problems in developing a new model of component mounting inspection equipment.
The new model was to be equipped with a UPS to back up the production control system installed in the equipment, but the company was considering adopting a "Passive Standby" to "reduce equipment costs." However, there were some issues with reliability with this method. Mr. H, the head of the company's engineering department, said the following:
"Although Passive Standby are inexpensive, there is a risk of data corruption due to the 'momentary interruption' that occurs during a power outage, and we were very concerned about protecting the data in our systems."

In addition, Passive Standby had problems when used overseas.
"This isn't really a problem in Japan, where the power supply situation is stable, but at overseas bases where a stable power supply is not possible, fluctuations in voltage and frequency cannot be corrected with Passive Standby, which poses risks," said Mr. H.
To solve these problems, it was thought that it would be best to adopt a "Double Conversion Online" that would supply power with a stable output voltage and frequency regardless of the input voltage. However, this would be expensive and would not be able to meet the demand for reducing equipment costs. Mr. H was at a loss as to what to do next, given the dilemma between reliability and cost.
"Customers wanted the equipment to operate stably at the same rate at their production sites, both in Japan and overseas. With an increasing number of users looking to expand overseas, it was essential that the new model be usable overseas in the same way as it is in Japan," said Mr. H.

When Mr. H discussed these issues with a SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. sales representative who had come to his company for another matter, he was proposed a "hybrid UPS" that combined the two advantages of the "low cost" of Passive Standby and the "high reliability" of Double Conversion Online. Mr. H was highly interested and immediately decided to hear more details.
SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's proposed "Hybrid UPS" has the advantage that it does not experience momentary blackouts during power outages, as occurs with Passive Standby, but is cheaper than Double Conversion Online.
"The ability to continuously supply a perfect sine wave even during a power outage, like Double Conversion Online was exactly what we were looking for. We were convinced that this would easily overcome the challenges of keeping equipment costs down and achieving stable operation.
Another advantage is that it is more efficient than a full-time Inverter system because it automatically selects the optimal mode from three options - efficiency priority mode, active filter mode, and power supply quality priority mode - depending on the power supply conditions." (Mr. H)
Mr. H also noticed that the software could be used overseas without any problems.
"There is a lineup of 100V and 200V models, and they are UL/CE compliant, so they can be used overseas in the same way as they are in Japan. In addition, the included power management software can be made available in English by selecting the language. We liked the fact that the software comes as standard, so customers do not need to purchase a separate option for configuration. Another benefit we really appreciated was that installation parts such as floor fixing brackets could be prepared in a short delivery time, allowing us to quickly respond to installation on FA equipment in factories." (Mr. H)
Company R thus decided to adopt SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's "Hybrid UPS." After the introduction, development progressed smoothly, and the component mounting inspection equipment released a few months later operated without any problems both in Japan and overseas, and was highly praised by users.
Mr. H. said:
"Until now, we had only traded servo systems with SANYO DENKI CO., LTD., so we didn't know they also handled UPS. However, by consulting with them this time, we were able to receive a proposal for the optimal UPS. We learned that SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's sales staff have a wide range of knowledge about their own products, so in the future, if we have any problems with development, we will consult SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. first."
