Case Study
The inside of the equipment becomes hot. In addition to cooling performance, fans that can significantly reduce noise are required.

What is this cooling fan that achieves "less than half the noise level, approximately 40% less power consumption, and 1.5 times longer expected life"?

Company A, an office automation equipment manufacturer (number of employees: approx. 1,000)
assignment
  • Increased heat generation due to higher performance of equipment.
  • Improving cooling performance compared to the current fan would result in noise becoming an issue.
effect
  • Achieves both improved cooling performance and reduced noise.
  • It also has added value such as reduced power consumption and longer life.
Cooling issues within equipment are a headache for many engineers. Selecting the right fan is important to prevent thermal problems with equipment. Cooling fans have evolved in performance while overcoming various challenges, such as improving cooling performance while reducing noise, reducing power consumption, and improving expected life.

Problem

It is difficult to find a fan that can improve cooling performance while reducing noise.

Company A, a manufacturer of office automation equipment, was recently working on a model change for their flagship product. However, as the performance of the equipment improved, the amount of heat generated increased, and they found that the conventional cooling fans were not providing sufficient cooling. Mr. F, an engineer in the development department of Company A, explained as follows:

"The current model used a quiet type fan made by SANYO DENKI CO., LTD., but when we tried to use it for the new development model, we found that the cooling performance was insufficient. So we started evaluations using a high-volume fan for the new model. This time, although we were able to meet the cooling performance requirements, noise became an issue. Because office equipment is used in close proximity to people, we needed to find a fan that could reduce noise while still maintaining cooling performance." (Mr. F)

Searching for a fan that would meet the requirements of the new model, Mr. F and his colleagues approached SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's sales department for advice.

Solution

Proposing a fan that can significantly reduce noise while maintaining cooling performance

SANYO DENKI CO., LTD., which was consulted by Mr. F about the cooling performance and noise of fans, proposed the "San Ace" 9RA type DC Cooling Fan to address Company A's issues.
Mr. F was very excited by the explanation from the person in charge that "the noise level has been reduced while maintaining the same level of cooling performance as the conventional high-volume type." He immediately requested a 120 x 25 mm sample and carried out actual testing in-house.

"As a result of our testing, we were able to confirm that the noise level of the fan alone was reduced by 4dB(A) compared to the high-airflow fan we had initially considered. This is equivalent to reducing the noise level by more than half. We were also surprised to find that when we implemented it in equipment and evaluated it, we could reduce the noise level even further. Not only is this fan's cooling performance impeccable, we are also confident that it will meet the target specifications for equipment noise." (Mr. F)

Added value other than low noise and a rich lineup

Shortly after, Company A decided to adopt SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's "San Ace" 9RA type DC Cooling Fan.

"In addition to being quiet, Sanyo Denki fans are also attractive because they consume little power *1 and have a long lifespan *2. In comparative testing with a variety of other products, SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. fans were rated the best. Another point that was highly rated was their flexibility in responding to customization requests, such as adding connectors. The lineup also includes sizes and voltage specifications other than the 120x25mm we used this time, so they are likely to be strong candidates for use in future products we develop." (Mr. F)

*1 Power consumption is reduced by approximately 39% in free air conditions compared to conventional products.
*2 The expected life span of the San Ace 120 9RA type is 60,000 hours compared to 40,000 hours for conventional products (L10: survival rate 90%, 60°C, rated voltage, continuous operation, free air state).
