Improved reliability of dust collectors that support medical facilities!

How to "increase suction power" by reducing the number of fans?

Dust collector manufacturer K (Number of employees: approx. 300)

Problem

The medical device market in Japan alone is said to exceed 2 trillion yen. It is a market that continues to grow steadily even on a global scale, and the government has set the globalization of Japan's "manufacturing technology" as a key strategy, and is supporting medical device development as a field that will revitalize domestic industry and strengthen international competitiveness.

There is a demand for "increased suction power," but increases in power consumption and noise cannot be tolerated...

Company K entered the medical equipment market about 10 years ago, and currently one of its main products is a dust collector that is built into powder and tablet packaging machines for hospital pharmacies and dispensing pharmacies.

However, there had been requests from users for even stronger suction power, so the company decided to embark on the development of a new model with stronger suction power. However, since the dust collector is used in quiet environments such as pharmacies, it was necessary to reduce power consumption and noise. Mr. F of the Medical Device Development Department at Company K looks back on the situation as follows:

"To improve suction power, we first considered replacing the installed fans. Each unit currently has two fans, but when we tried to replace them with types that had a larger airflow, we found that the increased power consumption and noise were a problem, and we had a hard time finding a suitable fan."

The manufacturer's "support system" is also an important point

On the other hand, Mr. F was dissatisfied with the current response from the fan manufacturer. He had been frustrated by the poor response when the fan stopped working due to a malfunction, and by the lack of any concrete suggestions when he asked for advice on increasing the fan volume.
"The fact that the manufacturer had a solid support system was also an important point in selecting the fan. Although dust collectors are not devices that directly affect life, they are used in the medical field and therefore require a high level of reliability. We were looking for a manufacturer that understood this point and would take it into consideration." (Mr. F)

Key issues and problems
  • I would like to increase the suction power of my dust collector, but the fan I'm currently using doesn't have enough airflow.
  • There are concerns that increasing the fan's airflow will result in increased power consumption and noise.
  • As this is a medical product, high reliability is required.
  • It is preferable to choose a manufacturer with a solid support system.

Solution

Two fans in one achieve high airflow, energy savings and low noise at the same time

Mr. F, who had reached a dead end in his search for a solution, visited an exhibition and stopped by the SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. Denki booth, where fans were on display and demonstrations, to discuss his issues.
A sales representative from SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. visited Company K later, listened to the details of the issues, and proposed installing one Centrifugal Fan measuring φ175mm x 69mm thick.

"Centrifugal Fan that was proposed was indeed larger than the fan we had previously been using, but I was surprised to hear that just one fan could produce more airflow than what had previously required two fans. When I asked for more details, I was told that by using a larger fan at a lower rotation speed, it was possible to achieve a high airflow while also reducing noise levels. This was a proposal that was made with a thorough understanding of fans.
In addition, this fan has PWM control function. The rotation speed can be easily controlled according to the situation, which helps reduce noise and power consumption." (Mr. F)

Convinced by the support system and high reliability

Mr. F requested an evaluation sample from SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. in order to evaluate the actual product.
"The other company's product that we were considering at the same time took two months to deliver samples, but SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. prepared samples in just one week, so we were able to start building a prototype right away. They also provided us with data on reliability tests and life tests to back up their high reliability, which alleviated our engineers' concerns and allowed us to proceed with the evaluation smoothly."

After thorough internal testing, Company K recognized the high reliability of SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's Centrifugal Fan and decided to adopt them. The fact that the company conducts a 100% inspection before shipping also helped make the decision.

The prototype, which was completed a few months later, achieved the expected increase in suction power while also saving energy and reducing noise. Company K soon began mass production of the new model and began selling it.
Mr. F had this to say about this hiring:
"Not only was the fan's performance outstanding, but we were also very grateful for the well-thought-out suggestions and speedy response. We were also able to get the support we were worried about, and we feel we have gained a strong partner."

For more information about Centrifugal Fan, please see "Characteristics of Centrifugal Fan ".

effect
  • The high-volume "Centrifugal Fan" reduces the number of installed fans from two to one, thereby increasing suction power.
  • PWM control function improves operational efficiency, reducing power consumption and noise.
  • Providing data to back up reliability and alleviating engineers' concerns.
  • Rapid sample delivery makes product evaluation easy.
