Problem
  • No waterproof fan guaranteed for operation in -25˚C low temperature environments.
  • No cost flexibility.
Solution and Results
  • Increased the operating temperature range to -25˚C by changing the capacitor and lead wire.
  • Flexible custom support shortened the development period.
Freezers and refrigerators are always running and used 365 days a year. Manufacturers are trying to differentiate their products by adding various functions as well as energy-saving performance.

Problem

The company needed a waterproof fan that can withstand low temperature environments.

Company N, which manufactures and sells commercial freezers and refrigerators, had been developing a new model for a smaller sized freezer. Mr. W of the company's development department had this to say:

"The inside of the freezer must be kept at a constant temperature. So, a fan is installed to circulate cold air at all times. Since this new model is designed with a fan attached to the interior side, the installed fan must have both waterproof performance and operate normally in a low temperature environment of -25˚C. However, after thorough study, we could not find a waterproof fan whose operation is guaranteed under such temperature range. Besides, the selling price was already set, so there was no cost flexibility."

With no fans meeting their conditions, Mr. W was at a loss for how to proceed with the development.

Solution and Results

Flexible customization of the Splash Proof Fan increased operating temperature range to -25˚C

Mr. W visited an exhibition in search of a solution. He stopped by the SANYO DENKI booth, where he mentioned his problems. Later, a SANYO DENKI sales representative visited Company N to discuss their issues in detail.
"The representative suggested that the operating temperature range could be expanded to -25˚C by changing the capacitor and the lead wire of the current Splash Proof Fan" *. We immediately decided to ask for a prototype so we could evaluate it in-house."

The results of the evaluation were as expected, and they found that there was no problem in operation and durability in a low temperature environment. In addition, since the problem was solved just by changing the capacitor and lead wire, they were able to avoid a significant cost increase. "Actually, we had also called several other companies, but we didn't receive any concrete suggestions. We are very grateful to SANYO DENKI for their speedy and flexible custom support. I expect that SANYO DENKI will continue to make such proposals in the future," said Mr. W.
