Company S deals with various lighting equipment, from home lighting to large-scale outdoor lighting facilities. Currently, the company's products are mainly models that use LEDs. Although LEDs generate less heat than incandescent lamps, the inside of the unit can become hot when used for long periods of time. For this reason, most of the products are equipped with AC Cooling Fan for cooling, but this fan was causing a problem. Mr. A of the Technology Development Department at Company S says the following.
"In the current model, we use AC Cooling Fan to cool the light source. However, the ambient temperature still reached an extremely high 90°C, causing the fan blades to deform and come into contact with the fan frame. The blades melted due to heat, stretched due to centrifugal force, and hit the frame."
In response to this malfunction, Mr. A quickly stopped using the fan, but was forced to quickly find a replacement fan.
"Of course, LEDs need to function properly in high-temperature environments, but because LEDs have a very long lifespan, the fans they are equipped with also need to be durable to match. Another issue was how to reduce the fan's power consumption in order to take advantage of the energy-saving performance that is one of the major benefits of using LEDs.
"It works without problems even in high-temperature environments, is highly durable, and is energy-efficient. We had to find a fan that was suitable for the LED unit so that our customers could use it with peace of mind." (Mr. A)
Mr. A, who had been continuing to gather information about fans to be installed in LED units, also contacted SANYO DENKI CO., LTD..
Mr. A later consulted with a SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. representative who visited Company S about the fan issues and was suggested a DC-powered "Long Life Fan."
"We were told that DC fans are more efficient than AC Cooling Fan and have a longer expected lifespan, making them ideal for environments like this. I was surprised to hear that by using Long Life Fan, the expected lifespan can be 7.2 times longer than that of current fans, even in high-temperature environments, and power consumption can be reduced by nearly 70%." (Mr. A)
Mr. A was very interested in the proposal and decided to hear more about it.
"It seems that a fan's lifespan is roughly halved when the ambient temperature rises by 15°C. The expected lifespan of Long Life Fan proposed to us was 180,000 hours at an ambient temperature of 60°C. At 90°C, it was 45,000 hours. The expected lifespan of current AC Cooling Fan is 25,000 hours at an ambient temperature of 60°C, so we found that at 90°C, it would only be 6,250 hours." (Mr. A)
However, Mr. A still said, "I was worried whether the fan would really work properly in a high-temperature environment of 90 degrees Celsius." In response, SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. provided him with test data.
"SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's Long Life Fan are tested at temperatures of over 100°C, and they provided us with data on 12,500 hours of operation. I knew they had plenty of durability, and my concerns were immediately alleviated." (Mr. A)
Mr. A immediately ordered a sample and began evaluating the actual product.
"When we were evaluating the actual product, we received advice and support on how to customize it to guarantee operation at 90°C, such as by replacing electronic components with those that can withstand high temperatures, and on how to extend the lifespan of the fan." (Mr. A)
Having confirmed that its requirements were fully met, Company S decided to adopt SANYO DENKI CO., LTD. 's "Long Life Fan."
"Thanks to their detailed support, we were able to install the optimal fan for the LED unit, and we are very grateful for that. We are also looking forward to their new product, Wide Temperature Range Fan, which guarantees use in environments with ambient temperatures ranging from -40°C to 85°C." (Mr. A)
